Understanding Embryo Grading and Selection in IVF

Sr. Embryologist KavithaMar 30, 202410 min read

One of the most critical steps in IVF is selecting the right embryo for transfer. Embryo grading helps embryologists identify which embryos have the highest potential for successful implantation.

Day 3 vs Day 5 Embryos

Embryos can be transferred on Day 3 (cleavage stage, 8 cells) or Day 5 (blastocyst stage). Day 5 blastocysts are generally preferred as they are more developed and have a higher implantation potential.

Grading Criteria

Blastocysts are graded on three parameters: expansion (1–6), inner cell mass quality (A, B, C), and trophectoderm quality (A, B, C). A 4AA or 5AA blastocyst represents the highest grade and best prognosis.

Time-Lapse Technology

At Aryamba, we use time-lapse incubation, which continuously monitors embryos without disturbing them. This provides extra data points for embryo selection without exposing embryos to environmental changes.

Genetic Testing (PGT)

Pre-implantation genetic testing screens embryos for chromosomal abnormalities before transfer, further improving success rates and reducing miscarriage risk — especially for women over 35 or those with recurrent failure.
